  • The currency is the Indonesia Rupiah. There are roughly 13,000-15,000 Rupiah to the $1 US or 1 Euro
  • The emergency telephone numbers are 110/112 for police, 118 for ambulance and 113 for fire. The international dialling code is +62. They use 2 pin plug sockets.
  • It’s debated how many islands Indonesia actually has, as many disappear and reappear with the tide. A survey conducted between 2007 and 2010 counted 13,466 islands, but an earlier one claimed 18,307, and, according to the CIA World Factbook, there are 17,508 islands. Either way, there’s a shitload, and is the world’s largest nation comprised solely of islands. With 238 million people it is the 4th most populous nation on earth.
  • The archipelago is spread over the tumultuous Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ and has over 400 active volcanoes and records at least three earthquakes a day. And if over-indulge on the local food that won’t be the only ‘ring of fire’ you experience.
  • Although Bali is predominantly Hindu, most of Indonesia is Muslim. In fact the nation has more Muslims than any other in the world, and most regions are quite conservative. Although surprisingly Indonesians are very open and tolerant towards alternative expressions of gender, they do not openly discuss sex. The general term in Indonesian for both male and female genitalia is kemaluan, meaning “shame” or “embarrassment.”
